Treatment for Genital Herpes
Treatment for Genital Herpes
A diagnosis of herpes of any kind is a heartbreak, but genital herpes is an even greater misfortune. There are a few prescription treatments available, but there may also be an over the counter treatment for herpes that would work in certain situations.
To understand how the treatments work, you should first understand the disease. Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease, or STD, that one contracts from someone else with it. It does not need to be in the outbreak stage to be transmitted. Although many have more mild symptoms, it can cause blisters around the genital area which will eventually open and leave sores. The virus remains in the body and outbreaks reappear periodically.
Basic Treatments
Although there is no cure, many companies have produced a treatment for genital herpes that will lessen symptoms and shorten the durations of the outbreak. Zovirax, Famvir, and Valtrex are prescription medications which prevent the virus from reproducing, thus shortening the outbreak.
There are also topical creams that claim to do the same thing. Many are an over the counter treatment for herpes, and are designed to work directly on location. Besides helping to prevent the virus from replicating, some of them also help reduce pain and other discomfort at the blister site.
Other popular treatments include supplements–many take the amino acid L-Lysine to help prevent outbreaks. However, not all amino acids are known to stall a case of herpes. In fact, some amino acids (such as Arginine and Ornithine) are thought to bring about an outbreak if not checked by L-Lysine. So if you are thinking of using supplements to help treat an outbreak or prevent herpes, do good research so that you know exactly what to expect.
Although a treatment for genital herpes is not going to cure a patient of herpes, it will reduce the discomfort and the length of the outbreak. Remember that many treatments for diseases of all kinds are similar in their approach. For instance, if you had strep and needed antibiotics, you would not expect the drugs to work immediately, nor would you expect the disease to simply disappear once the medications take effect.
However, one difference is clear–once you have gotten rid of your strep, you no longer have it. Genital herpes will always be part of your life, and you will always have to take precautions with sex partners to protect them.
Over the Counter Treatment for Herpes
If you wish, you can go to your local drug store or grocer and find several treatments to choose from. However, do you really want to parade your problem around the store for everyone to see? Of course not–you may want to look for your treatment for genital herpes on the internet, away from judging eyes. Plus, you may find that there is a much wider variety of treatments available over the internet than in the stores.
In any event, you should make your purchase before you have an outbreak. No one wants to sense the first disappointing sensations of an outbreak and have to go to the store or wait for a shipment, even if it’s overnight. Order your supplies before your outbreak so you can be ready at any time.
