Yes, it is possible to get genital herpes from someone performing oral sex on you who has oral herpes. This is true even when they do not have a visible cold sore – herpes is not infectious all the time but is sometimes infectious when there are no symptoms at all. I caught genital herpes from receiving oral sex and my boyfriend had no symptoms at the time.
Most oral herpes is caused by the hsv1 virus and genital herpes is normally caused by hsv2, so what you end up with is a case of genital hsv1 which is less severe than genital hsv2 in that it recurrs less often – it prefers to be on your mouth.
