is it true that if you get cold sores (mouth herpes) then you’re immune to Genital Herpes?
Everyone knows there are 2 types of Herpes….simplex type 1 and simplex type 2. As a kid I used to get cold sores around my mouth, not so much lately though. But I just found out an ex of mine had genital herpes, yet I have no symptoms (yet).
Ive heard that if you have the cold sore herpes, youre immune to getting genital herpes.
Is this true?
Nope. Lets start with a couple of definitions here …
HSV1 is the virus that usually infects the mouth, but can infect the genitals.
HSV2 is the virus that usually infects the genitals, but can infect the mouth.
“Oral herpes” means having either strain on your mouth, while “genital herpes” means having either strain on your genitals.
Once you have HSV1 orally – and have had it long enough for antibodies to build up in your body – you are unlikely to catch HSV1 genitally. And having HSV1 offers some small protection against HSV2.
But you definitely can still catch HSV2 genitally – classic genital herpes – even if you have oral HSV1 – classic cold sores.
